Antique Shirvan Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful tribal Antique Shirvan rug in good original condition, showing the intact fringes and lovely natural dyes.  Woven with a rare ivory background colour, the vibrant pale blues and yellows with reds bring a lot of life to this antique caucasian rug.  We love the simple all over geometric design with lattice pattern.  Classic caucasian rug border and wonderful dyes.  As this is a tribal Caucasian rug dating from around 1910, it is not perfectly symmetrical or straight, as it was woven on a loom in the ground.  The weaver would often travel and take the loom up and move, hence these rugs are never perfect in shape or size.  In honest original condition, and full of charm and character.

Visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey or allow us to visit you where you can view any of our antique or modern rugs in situ.  Request a home visit to choose a convenient day and time you would like to see any of our antique rugs at home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shirvan rugs originate from the southeast Caucasus region, woven primarily by tribal artisans using fine hand-spun wool yarns. They are characterized by complex geometric designs, lattice patterns, and dense knotting compared to other Caucasian carpet types.

Traditional Shirvan rugs are hand-knotted using wool pile on a wool warp and wefts. The dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, producing saturated hues of red, blue, cream, and yellow.

Authentic pieces feature a flexible wool foundation with symmetrical double-knotted construction, low-cut pile, and multiple Guard borders with distinct geometric motifs. Slight asymmetrical irregularities in pattern and dye batch shading often indicate handcraftsmanship.

Geometric tribal rugs serve as anchoring visual elements in contemporary settings, adding texture and historic warmth. Placing them on neutral hardwood floors under minimalist furniture creates an effective balance between modern design and antique craftsmanship.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibers. Rotate the rug periodically to distribute foot traffic evenly, and consult a professional restorer specializing in hand-knotted textiles for cleaning.
