Fine 18th Century Mahogany Secretaire Tallboy

18th century
For Sale by Holmes Antiques
Description

A very fine 18th Century figured Mahogany Secretaire Tallboy in superb original condition and of the most wonderful untouched colour and patina. Retaining the original decorated handles, locks , hinges, drawer knobs to the interior, feet and quite remarkably the original key. The interior of the secretaire drawer is so exceptionally clean that it is hard to imagine it was actually made around 250 years ago, it has obviously had very little use with no signs of ink where you would expect it.

The quality of the craftsmanship is superb and the piece is highly decorated with dental cornice, carved blind fretwork to the frieze, canted fretwork corners, and ogee bracket feet. The incredibly clean drawer linings are all original and made in oak.

It is worth noting that it is most unusual to see carved detail added to fretwork as it is on this piece. This piece was probably commissioned for an important house and made by a leading furniture maker of the period. It seems from the label on the back of the piece that it was probably purchased from John Keil Ltd. Interestingly information about the firm including images of the shop at 51 Park St can be seen on the website of Antique Dealers -University of Leeds.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire tallboy, also known as a chest-on-chest, is an 18th-century storage cabinet consisting of two stacked chest sections. It features a concealed fitted writing desk within one of the upper drawer fronts.

Primary cabinet woods typically include dense flame mahogany or walnut veneers constructed over pine or oak carcases. Hardware comprises cast brass swan-neck handles, backplates, steel locks, and brass escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail construction, hand-sawn secondary timber linings, and period-correct brassware with historical shadow marks. Natural timber shrinkage cracks and subtle unevenness in drawer construction further indicate age.

Positioning a mahogany tallboy against neutral plaster walls or muted colour palettes creates a strong architectural anchor. Contrast the dark wood grain with modern linear lighting and contemporary artwork to balance classic and modern elements.

Apply a pure beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original patina and prevent wood desiccation. Keep the piece in an environment with stable humidity levels, away from direct radiators and prolonged sunlight.
