Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Champagne buckets gained widespread popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as chilled sparkling wine became a staple of formal dining. Electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) allowed manufacturers to create durable, polished vessels featuring classical and Art Deco design elements for domestic and hotel use.

Traditional wine chillers are typically constructed from electroplated nickel silver, solid brass, copper, or stainless steel. Silver-plated examples feature a thin layer of pure silver electrochemically bonded over a base metal core to provide reflective shine and resistance to corrosion.

Authentic pieces often feature stamped hallmarks or makers marks near the rim or base, such as EPNS or manufacturer logos. Age can also be determined by construction details like soldered ring handles, rolled rims, and natural wear where base metal shows through the silver layer.

A silver-plated bucket works as a functional decorative object on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or kitchen island. When not in use for chilling bottles, it can be styled as a table centrepiece or repurposed to display fresh floral arrangements.

Clean silver plate using a specialized, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish and oxidisation. Wash with mild soapy water, dry thoroughly immediately after use, and avoid abrasive sponges or dishwasher cleaning to preserve the plated layer.
