Description

Large late 18th century Chinese bronze figural incense burner, c1790. This is a fine example, heavy at 2kg and beautifully cast in the form of a Kylin / Qilin , or similar mythical creature. Kylin feature widely in Chinese and East Asian cultures and symbolize prosperity and good luck. This example stands proudly on a raised and pierced base and is depicted holding a torch. The decoration and detail to the features etc is fine and crisp. The bronze has taken on great colour/patina following years of handling with some Verdigris. Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chinese bronze Kylin censer is a incense burner cast in the form of the Qilin, a mythical horned creature from Chinese mythology associated with prosperity and good omen. These vessels were designed so that burning incense smoke escapes through the open mouth or nostrils of the figure.

Qing dynasty bronze censers were typically produced using lost-wax casting techniques or piece-mould casting. Once cast, artisans refined the intricate surface detailing by hand-chasing the scales, fur textures, and geometric pierced bases, finishing the metal with applied patination.

Authentic late 18th-century Chinese bronzes feature naturally developed surface patina and oxidisation consistent with age, rather than uniform chemical staining. Examiners also inspect casting seams, hand-chased tool marks, base construction, and natural wear patterns on contact points.

A bronze Qilin censer serves as a sculptural accent on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or dark wood side table. Its dark metallic tones complement natural timber surfaces, modern minimalist backdrops, and classical library settings.

Preserve bronze metalwork by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, and abrasive polishes, as these strip historic patination; a light application of microcrystalline wax can be used to protect the surface.
