Serpentine Chest of Drawers by P.g. Axner, Stockholm, C.1850

19th century
Description

A stunning mid-19th century Swedish serpentine flame mahogany chest of drawers, c.1850, with the original maker's label 'P. G. Axner, Snickare [Carpenter], Stockholm, Oxtorget No 6', retained to the inside top drawer.

The piece is of truly exceptional quality throughout. Four large graduated drawers with original rams' head brasses are flanked by two columns adorned with finely carved foliate detail, all above bracket feet. The colour of the wood is outstanding and really does glow when caught by the light.

There are a few small signs of wear commensurate with age, most notably small veneer replacements to the back feet and a small mark to the right of the top (please see photographs), but generally the piece remains in a very good condition throughout.
