Victorian Silver Mounted Spirit Hip Flask Glasgow 1873

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A Victorian silver mounted oval spirit or hip flask with clear hallmarks on both the side and the screw top for Glasgow 1873, Queen Victoria head, and makers mark for initials JM - there are several makers registered in Glasgow Assay Office with these initials around 1873, John Miller and John Muirhead being two possibles.

The smooth silver base or cup is gilt lined and fits perfectly. The top half of the flask is covered in brown striped leather with cut outs for checking the level of liquid (presumably they were always half full!). The secrew top and lid are silver, hallmarked. The screw top works perfectly. There is some very minor shrinkage in the leather just under the screw top.

Lovely quality with weight and substance, very tactile and still useful.

Some shading on the silver is due to photography shadow - the silver is smooth and clear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian hip flasks were designed as portable personal spirit containers for outdoor pursuits such as hunting, travelling, and sporting events. They frequently featured glass bodies encased in leather with removable sterling silver drinking cups.

Traditional Victorian spirit flasks combine hand-blown glass containers with bound leather upper sections and sterling silver or electroplated lower cups and caps, engineered to prevent metal contact from altering the flavour of the liquor.

Look for clear hallmark stamps indicating the silver purity, makers mark, town mark, and date letter on the removable cup and silver collar, along with period details like bayonet caps and vertical liquid sight-lines in the leather.

Display the flask on a bar cart, atop an office desk, or inside a glazed display cabinet alongside period barware and glass decanters to add texture and historical context.

Clean the silver elements gently with a specialised silver polishing cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that could saturate and ruin the adjacent leather or interior cork seals.
