Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

High-back side chairs, traditionally referred to as gossip or corner chairs depending on their shape and arrangement, gained popularity in eighteenth-century Britain and Europe. Designed without arms to accommodate the elaborate attire and formal posture of the period, these chairs allowed occupants to converse comfortably in drawing rooms and parlours.

Traditional construction relies heavily on solid walnut timber or walnut veneers laid over pine or oak carcases. Key elements include hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, carved vasiform splats, H-stretchers for stability, and padded seats covered in leather, horsehair, or woven wool upholstery.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, irregularity in turned or carved components, and natural shrinkage across wood grain lines. Later Victorian or Edwardian revival chairs generally exhibit precise machine tooling, uniform dimensions, modern screw threads, and more contemporary seat padding materials.

A pair of carved walnut side chairs can be positioned on either side of a console table in an entryway or used as accent seating in a quiet corner. Flanking a fireplace or pairing them with contemporary neutral upholstery creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain walnut timber by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, joint loosening, and wood fading.
