Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France during the reign of King Louis XV, the bureau de dame was designed specifically as a compact writing desk for women. It typically features soft curves, cabriole legs, and elaborate marquetry or veneer work characteristic of the Rococo period.

These desks were crafted using fine hardwoods such as walnut, kingwood, or tulipwood veneers over an oak frame. Decorative accents frequently feature cast gilt bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, alongside velvet or leather writing surfaces.

Authentic period or quality revival pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, genuine timber veneers with crossbanding, and heavy cast metal mounts secured with threaded screws. Look for natural wear on internal drawer runners and hand-carved cabriole legs.

A bureau de dame can serve as a decorative focal point in a hallway, bedroom nook, or living area. Pair it with neutral wall palettes and understated modern lighting to allow the ornate wood grain and metal mounts to stand out.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax annually to maintain the moisture of the veneer. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or gilding tarnishing.
