Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau de dame is a small slant-front writing desk designed specifically for women, originating in 18th-century France. Characterised by slender cabriole legs and decorative brass mounts, these pieces feature a sloped fall-front lid opening to reveal interior compartments.

These bureaux were commonly constructed using hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or kingwood, often decorated with burr veneers and marquetry. Brass or ormolu mounts and pierced galleries were applied to decorate the edges, corners, and feet.

Look for hand-finished dovetail joinery inside the drawers, original brass gallery rails, and natural wear around keyholes and feet. Early 1920s revival pieces feature hand-carved details and genuine timber veneers rather than modern synthetic laminates.

Position the bureau in a quiet alcove, hallway, or bedroom to create a compact workspace or dressing nook. Pair it with a minimalist modern chair or framed artwork to balance historical curves with clean modern lines.

Dust the wood surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber finish. Clean brass mounts gently using a dry cloth without harsh chemical cleaners to avoid stripping the patina.
