Gallop in the Country: Horses and Riders, Equestrian Scene Circa 1920 by French Virtuoso Watercolorist Watercolour on Paper

1900 - 1920
Description

A virtuoso watercolour depicting horses and riders by Pierre Olivier Dubaut (1886-1968), a painter who specialised in equestrian scenes.

Classically trained, Dubaut was a member of several artistic societies. He particularly admired and had studied the art of Théodore Gericault, a fellow lover of horses. In collaboration with the Duke of Treviso, Dubaut prepared a definitive publication on Géricault. He collected Old Master drawings and works on paper by Delacroix and Guys.

Dubaut loved the immediacy of working on paper and en plein air.

As wrote Art critic and historian Gerald Schurr wrote about Dubaut in his "Dictionary of the Lesser masters, 1820-1920":

Pierre Olivier Dubaut was a master of the watercolour - it was the ideal vehicle for his nimbleness, his warm spontaneity. With an agile brush, he seized the fleeting movement, the ephemeral. Form is suggested in elegant and light lines, without repentance."

Dubout depicted scenes from the trenches during the 1914-1918 war, and in peacetime, scened from Normandy, with its horse racing, paddocks, polo, games bathers on the beaches of Deauville. Economic and limpid washes construct the essential.

Dubout's watercolours are conserved in numerous museums, notably at the French National Museum of Modern Art /Pompidou Centre, and the museums of Trouville, Compiègne, Belfort and La Haye.

The work presented here is a wonderful example of Dubaut's favourite subject, horses and riders .

Painted circa 1920, our graphite and watercolour on paper measures 24 x 31 cm . Presented in its original frame, the overall size is 48 x 52 cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century French equestrian art often captures horses and riders in dynamic motion using fluid washes of watercolour and quick ink linework. Influenced by Impressionism, artists focused on movement, light, and countryside sporting traditions rather than rigid anatomical portraits.

Artists traditionally worked with watercolour pigments diluted with water on heavy paper, toned paper, or card stock. Ink, graphite, or gouache were frequently added to define contours, highlights, and shadow detailing.

Authentic works from this period typically exhibit age-appropriate tone changes in the paper, natural oxidisation, and artist signatures or monograms in graphite or ink. Inspecting the paper under magnification helps verify hand-painted strokes versus modern printed reproductions.

Mount the artwork inside a simple oak or dark walnut frame to highlight its traditional subject matter. Displaying it alongside contemporary ceramics or structured furniture creates a balanced contrast within modern or eclectic interiors.

Keep watercolour works away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper warping. Frame the painting using UV-protective glass and acid-free archival matting to preserve the original paper and pigments.
