Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fireplace fender is a low metal boundary placed around the hearth to prevent ash and burning embers from rolling onto carpets or timber floors. During the late 19th century, heavy brass fenders also served as decorative architectural features within formal reception rooms.

Late Victorian fenders were typically constructed from heavy-gauge tubular brass, cast iron, or sheet copper. Components included solid brass finials, decorative beaded mouldings, and iron-reinforced bases designed to withstand heat.

Authentic period fenders feature substantial weight, hand-assembled threaded rods, and period-appropriate fixings such as square nuts beneath the base. Natural patination, subtle wear along the top rail, and cast metal finials further indicate genuine late 19th-century construction.

Position the fender directly on the hearth tiles or stone slab surrounding an open fireplace, log burner, or decorative insert. The warm metallic tones complement both period stone surrounds and contemporary dark paint schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to remove loose debris. To preserve unlacquered aged brass, avoid abrasive chemical sprays and use dedicated brass polishes sparingly along detailed mouldings and finials.
