Large 18th Century Oak Gateleg Table.

Description

A large 18th Century Oak Gateleg Table that would happily seat 8 people.

The top with well chosen timber highlighting the medullary rays of the oak, standing on elegantly turned legs, joined by a moulded stretcher and having a drawer to one end. This table is of a fantastic colour and patina. Condition is good having some replaced hinges and it has lost a little height to the toes.

Originating in England during the late sixteenth century, gateleg tables became widespread throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Designed as space-saving furniture for homes, they featured hinged leaves supported by pivoting legs that opened like gates.
