Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian extending dining tables are characteristically sturdy, formal, and constructed from rich hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or oak. Designed during the 19th century to accommodate formal dinner parties, they feature mechanical winding systems or telescopic runners alongside heavily turned, carved, or fluted legs.

Solid Cuban or Honduran mahogany was the primary timber choice due to its stability, dense grain structure, and deep colour. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for internal runners, while brass castors and steel winding screws formed the functional hardware.

Authentic period extending tables feature heavy wooden telescopic runners attached beneath the tabletop, often operated via a brass winding handle and iron screw mechanism. Look for original brass clips used to secure additional leaves and signs of hand-planed joinery beneath the apron.

A substantial Victorian dining table can be balanced by pairing it with streamlined contemporary dining chairs, modern architectural pendant lighting, or a neutral woven rug underneath. This contrast creates a curated space that highlights the natural wood grain and craftsmanship of the antique frame.

Keep the wood polished with high-grade beeswax applied sparingly along the grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays. Protect the French polished surface from heat and moisture using table pads, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or split tops.
