19thc Rosewood Occasional Table

19th century
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This 19thC Rosewood Occasional Table has a beautiful flowing design to the base. The end supports are carved and shaped to flow into the pair of feet, that themselves show good form. The centre stretcher adds strength, and with the base being made of solid rosewood there is a good weight to the table.

The figured Rosewood top benefits from having a small, raised surround to it helping to stop anything rolling off. Being of a useful size and a very convenient height this table can be put to many uses around the home.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Occasional tables from the 19th century were designed for versatile placement throughout the home, serving various functions from holding tea sets to displaying decorative items. During the Victorian era, these pieces often featured intricate carving, scrollwork supports, and rich timber finishes such as rosewood or mahogany.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used dense hardwoods like rosewood, walnut, and mahogany, often applying decorative veneers over solid timber frames. Construction methods included hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, wooden dowels, and hand-carved support frames or stretchers to maintain structural stability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit distinct grain characteristics, such as the dark, contrasting streaks typical of Brazilian or East Indian rosewood, alongside signs of natural patination and age appropriate wear. Inspection of the underside typically reveals hand-sawn timber marks, original fitting hardware, and natural shrinkage across wood joints.

A 19th-century occasional table functions as an accent piece alongside contemporary upholstery, creating a contrast in texture and tone. Positioning the item next to a modern sofa or arm chair balances clean contemporary lines with historic wood craftsmanship.

Maintain timber hydration by applying high-quality beeswax polish along the direction of the grain two to three times per year. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent uneven fading, wood movement, or finish deterioration.
