Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian occasional tables are compact, secondary furniture pieces produced during the mid-to-late 19th century, designed to be moved easily around a living room or parlour. They frequently feature central turned or faceted pedestals, quadform bases, and decorative surface embellishments such as marquetry or parquetry inlays.

These tables were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany or rosewood, often surfaced with fine timber veneers. Decorative top medallions utilised contrasting exotic woods including satinwood, ebony, walnut, and boxwood to form intricate geometric or floral patterns.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of historic hand-craftsmanship, such as slight irregularities in the hand-cut marquetry veneers, natural shrinkage lines along grain boundaries, and dark oxidisation on the unfinished undersides. Hardware and table top tilt mechanisms, if present, typically feature hand-threaded steel screws and cast brass fittings.

Position the table alongside a clean-lined modern sofa or armchair to create a functional surface for lighting or beverages while introducing material warmth. Placing a contemporary ceramic lamp or minimalist object on the table creates an intentional contrast between antique woodwork and modern decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and moisture to prevent the wood veneers from lifting or cracking.
