Edwardian Inlaid Side Table with Lift Up Top

1900 - 1920
Description

A square Edwardian mahogany side table, with a hinged top over a small storage area. The table stands on slim tapered legs and features an inlaid border to the top with a central circular inlaid design with a central ivorine roundel, and a smaller star shaped inlay to the centre of the under shelf. Simple in design but with just the right amount of detail, this little table would suit many homes.

Condition: There is a small area of damage to one corner of the top. The inlaid areas are slightly uneven (I have tried to show this in the last photo) and there is general minor surface wear in accordance with age and use. Otherwise in good solid condition.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, dating from 1901 to 1910, is known for lighter, more delicate proportions than Victorian furniture. Influenced by 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, pieces frequently feature mahogany woods, tapered legs, and detailed decorative inlay.

Edwardian craftsmen primarily used mahogany as the primary wood, accentuating surfaces with contrasting marquetry inlays made from satinwood, boxwood, rosewood, and ebony. Solid brass hinges and iron fittings were standard for functional components.

Authentic pieces feature genuine hand-cut or early machine-cut marquetry inlays flush with the timber surface, square tapered legs, and natural patination inside storage compartments. Hand-dovetailed drawer construction and period brass hardware also signal authenticity.

Position the table beside a modern armchair or sofa to create a contrast between historic woodworking and contemporary upholstery. Use the surface for a minimal table lamp or decorative ceramics to complement the warm mahogany tone.

Clean the surface regularly using a soft, dry cotton cloth to remove dust. Apply a beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding silicon-based sprays, and keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
