Curious Antiques has dated these Meiji Period Bronze Vases to the 19th Century.
A true pair they have subtle and highly symbolic differences in the decoration. On one side they depict a crane in flight ascending to the clouds and the other shows a crane descending through the clouds. The other side shows a figure looking up to the clouds/praying while the other vase shows the same/similar figure holding an axe. The level of detail is very fine with the clouds, foliage, birds and figures beautifully depicted. The handles are stylised dragons/mythical creatures. The vases have taken on great colour/patina following years of use and overall condition is good with no obvious issues.
