A Pair of Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Vases

19th century
Description

striking pair of Japanese bronze vases from the Meiji period (1868–1912), richly decorated with sculptural relief scenes of birds among flowering branches and foliage. The bodies display finely cast cranes, songbirds, and blossoming flora, rendered in deep relief with remarkable detail typical of decorative bronzes produced during Japan’s export boom of the late 19th century. Currently stored in Haywards Heath, West Sussex

Each vase features elegant openwork side handles formed by cranes beneath grapevine and leaf motifs, creating an architectural silhouette and adding sculptural movement to the form. The tall flared necks are adorned with additional relief decoration of birds perched among flowering branches.

The bronze surfaces have developed a deep brown patina with subtle tonal variation, enhancing the depth of the relief and giving the pair a warm, aged presence. Their classical proportions and strong decorative program make them equally suited for display as stand-alone sculptural objects or statement floral vessels.

Pieces of this type were created for both the Japanese domestic market and Western collectors during the Meiji period, when Japanese metalwork gained international acclaim for its exceptional craftsmanship and artistic refinement.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Meiji period (18681912) in Japan was renowned for exceptional metalwork craftsmanship, as former sword makers transitioned to creating intricate decorative objects like bronze vases, often featuring high-relief depictions of flora and fauna for global export.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using lost-wax casting methods (cire perdue), followed by hand-chiselling, carving, and chasing to achieve fine surface details, then finished with patination techniques using natural mineral compounds.

Genuine Meiji bronzes exhibit remarkable weight, precise hand-chased relief details depicting natural motifs, a deep, layered patina, and occasionally cast or incised signatures on the base or lower body.

A pair of bronze vases works exceptionally well as a symmetrical display on a sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table, adding historical texture and dark metallic contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals, water, or metal polishes that can strip the delicate original patina; a light application of microcrystalline wax can be used to protect the surface finish.
