Antique Kurdish Runner

19th century
Description

Lovely colours on this late 19th century runner, from the Kurdish weavers of the North-West of Persia, this antique runner has some wonderful light floral designs. The off-white border tone on this runner lifts the palette and works with the golden tones, and muted red pink colours.  In great pile with very minimal lower areas of pile. Ends and sides have been secured.

Woven in a loom in the ground, these were often taken up when the Kurd weavers would move onto pastures new.  So they were rarely completely straight, this runner is very close to being straight.  This adds a great deal to these collectable and beautiful runners in our opinion, and when laid flat on the floor with our underlay it would look superb, bringing colour and charm to a space.

Visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey, we are open Monday to Saturday by appointment.  Or allow us to visit you with this antique runner so you can trial it at home soon.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kurdish runners are traditional hand-knotted textiles created by nomadic and village weavers throughout the Kurdish region of Western Persia and Eastern Anatolia. Characterised by bold geometric motifs, repeating diamond medallions, and vibrant vegetable dyes, these carpets were constructed for practical daily use in traditional living spaces and long corridors.

These carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced sheep wool for the pile, tied onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. The dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for deep reds, indigo for blues, and walnut husks for rich brown shades.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool construction, natural dye variations known as abrash, and slight asymmetry in the repeating geometric patterns. Inspecting the back of the rug reveals visible hand-tied knots and uneven weave lines, contrasting with the uniform perfection of machine-made reproductions.

A long tribal runner works effectively in high-traffic transition spaces such as hallways, galas, or entryways to define the area and muffle acoustics. The geometric layout complements both traditional wooden flooring and contemporary polished concrete, adding linear interest and depth.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, dry cloth, and professional hand-washing is recommended every few years to preserve the wool oils and natural dyes.
