Antique English Georgian Blue and White "Returning Home" Pattern Plate ~ John Davenport

19th century
Description

A most attractive Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pearlware Soup Plate by John Davenport of Longport, one of three patterns presently available ex stock from this difficult to find series, to which the title "Rustic Scenes" has been allotted by Coysh and Henrywood in their "Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780 - 1880". This one, known as "Returning Home", depicts an extensive set of farm buildings with a large tree to the left and a man and child in the foreground, the scene set within the floral border found throughout the series. Printed in a medium blue, and beautifully finished in Davenport's usual high quality glaze, the reverse with the early impressed lower case Maker's mark, viz, Davenport above an anchor.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian blue and white transferware refers to lead-glazed earthenware produced in Great Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, featuring copperplate-engraved designs printed onto paper and transferred onto ceramic bodies prior to firing.

Davenport transferware was predominantly manufactured using refined white earthenware or pearlware bodies, coated with a clear lead glaze over cobalt oxide underglaze tissue prints.

Authentic Davenport pieces usually feature impressed or printed makers marks on the underside, such as an anchor symbol or the name Davenport, alongside characteristic dark cobalt tones and heavy earthenware weight.

Designers frequently mount decorative transferware plates in vertical wall arrangements, position them on plate rungs within dresser displays, or prop them on brass easels atop sideboards and mantelpieces to add pattern.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed using warm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive pads, soaking, temperature shocks, or dishwashers to protect the underlying glaze and structure.
