A Regency period red leather and brass workbox with secret correspondence compartment, c.1810-20.
For a similar example see Ralph Edwards & Percy Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, revised edition, Vol. I, London 1954, p. 115, fig. 39.
The workbox remains in a wholly original condition with gilt brass mounts, escutcheon and paw feet. The lid opens to reveal a red cloth, leather and gilt stamped interior. A small gilt latch to the top of the inside lid twists to reveal a secret correspondence compartment behind.
The leather shows wear commensurate with age and the two rear paw feet have been pushed down, however the workbox still stands firm and true.
A scarce piece.
