A stick barometer is a vertical, wall-mounted weather instrument designed to measure atmospheric pressure via a column of mercury inside a glass tube. Developed in the late seventeenth century, stick barometers became prominent household and scientific fixtures throughout the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian periods.

Traditional stick barometers were constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood for the main casing. Key functional components typically included a blown glass tube filled with mercury, silvered brass or ivory register plates, and brass fixtures such as finials, brackets, and adjustment keys.

Authentic period examples generally display hand-engraved silvered brass plates featuring maker signatures and location names, alongside period-appropriate architectural top details such as broken arch or swan-neck pediments. Construction evidence includes hand-cut joinery, original mercury glass tubing, and natural patination on both the timber and metalwork.

Due to their long, slender vertical profile, stick barometers work effectively when hung on narrow wall spaces, within gallery walls, alongside staircases, or centered above a console table or sideboard. Matching the rich wood tones with complementary dark timber frames creates visual cohesion across traditional or contemporary spaces.

To preserve a stick barometer, ensure it remains securely fixed vertically to a wall away from direct heat sources, draughts, or heavy vibration. The timber casing should be dusted with a soft dry cloth and occasionally treated with natural beeswax, avoiding aggressive liquid polish that could tarnish the silvered register plate or disturb residual mercury.
