Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, also known as a chimney glass, is a large decorative mirror specifically proportioned to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Emerging in popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect candle or firelight and maximise visual space in grand reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century mirrors were typically constructed using a wooden armature layered with gesso, a mixture of chalk and binder. Intricate ornamental details were moulded or carved into the gesso before paint or gilding was applied, framing heavy mercury-backed or silvered glass plate.

Authentic Victorian examples often feature hand-carved wood bases beneath gesso ornamentation, showing subtle age cracks or craquelure in the painted surface. Original mirror glass may display minor foxing or oxidisation spots, alongside handmade wooden backboards attached with historic nails.

A distressed overmantel mirror can be mounted directly above a modern or period fireplace to create a striking focal point. Alternatively, large arched versions can rest on a floor or sideboard against a feature wall to add depth and architectural interest to contemporary living spaces.

Dust the carved gesso frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent disturbing delicate ornamentation. Avoid liquid cleaners or damp cloths on painted gesso surfaces, and clean the glass separately using a lint-free cloth lightly sprayed with glass cleaner.
