Often constructed in two tiers, these pieces allowed homeowners to securely store dinnerware, spirits, and linens while displaying fine woodwork.

High-grade native and imported hardwoods were primary materials, with Cuban mahogany, flame mahogany veneers, and oak being widely favoured. Secondary woods such as pine or deal were used for internal shelving and backboards, secured with hand-cast brass hardware like H-hinges.
