They were constructed to reflect ambient light from candles or fireplaces into formal reception rooms while serving as a central decorative focal point.

Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors typically feature timber frames rendered with hand-carved details or moulded gesso application. The frames were finished using water gilding or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf applied over a clay bole base, housing silvered plate glass.
