Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as architectural features designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They were constructed to reflect ambient light from candles or fireplaces into formal reception rooms while serving as a central decorative focal point.

Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors typically feature timber frames rendered with hand-carved details or moulded gesso application. The frames were finished using water gilding or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf applied over a clay bole base, housing silvered plate glass.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural age markers such as light oxidation or desilverization on the mirror glass, subtle cracking in the gesso plaster (known as craquelure), and visible areas where red or grey clay bole shows through worn gilding.

Positioning a large gilded overmantel mirror above a fireplace or a contemporary console table creates scale and visual depth. The metallic tone contrasts effectively with both rich dark paint hues and minimalist modern interiors.

Remove dust using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture on gilding as water can dissolve gesso and ruin gold leaf. Mirror glass should be cleaned by spraying glass cleaner sparingly onto a microfiber cloth rather than directly onto the glass to protect the wooden frame edges.
