Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier cabinet is a low, narrow display or storage cabinet originally designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to fit against the wall spaces, or piers, between large windows. These cabinets were traditionally used to store books, display porcelain, or hold decorative objects in formal reception rooms.

Victorian and Revival pier cabinets were predominantly crafted using walnut or mahogany bases, frequently adorned with decorative burr walnut or rosewood veneers. Features often included glass front doors, velvet-lined interior shelving, and cast gilt-bronze or brass ormolu mounts.

Authentic period examples feature thick timber veneers, hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and heavy cast metal mounts with hand-chased details. Look for signs of natural timber shrinkage, slight irregularities in hand-blown glass panes, and original lock mechanisms on the doors.

Position the piece in a hallway, alcove, or living room space to serve as a low credenza or accent storage unit. Balance the rich walnut tone by placing minimalist modern artwork or ceramic lamps on the top surface, framing the cabinet against neutral, light-toned walls.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain to maintain the timber finish. Avoid chemical metal cleaners on the gilt-bronze mounts, as these can strip the original gilded surface and damage surrounding wood.
