Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a low item of furniture featuring divided vertical compartments designed during the late 18th and 19th centuries to hold sheet music or periodicals. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the initial design, Victorian examples often incorporated carved fretwork, upper tier shelves, and lower drawers.

Hardwoods such as burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood were standard choices during the Victorian period. Construction typically features hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, turned spindle supports, pierced fretwork panels, and original brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetails on the drawer box, original brass castors, and natural age-related patination across the wood. True burr walnut exhibits swirling grain configurations, and original examples frequently retain minor historical timber shrinkage along the delicate fretwork sections.

A Canterbury functions well as a side table or bedside table, offering storage for books or vinyl records within its open slats. Placing a table lamp or ceramic vessel on the upper shelf creates a functional focal point within modern living spaces.

Dust the surface regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a coat of beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the lustre and nourish the timber veneer. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent veneer lifting or wood movement.
