Antique Edwardian Silver Pin Cushion - Bellows

1900 - 1920
Description

A solid sterling silver pin cushion, dating from the Edwardian era, in the shape of a pair of bellows.

Hallmarked on the side for Birmingham 1906 with the maker's mark for Ridley Brothers & Merton. The marks are a little worn but still discernible.

The bellows have the original blue cushion, slightly faded at the edges. One side is set with a semi-precious hardstone boss. The 'handles' have a hook for attaching to a chatelaine. One of the handles has been slightly bent out of shape.

A lovely, fairly rare pin cushion for a collector.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced predominantly between 1901 and 1910, Edwardian novelty silver pin cushions were whimsical sewing accessories crafted in figurative shapes such as animals, shoes, and household implements like bellows.

These items typically combine hallmarked sterling silver casings with velvet or silk stuffed interiors designed to hold steel sewing pins securely.

Authentic pieces feature official British assay hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling silver, a city mark, a date letter, and a registered silversmith maker mark.

Small novelty silver items work well displayed inside glass cloches, arranged on vanity trays, or curated alongside other antique sewing implements on open shelving.

Buff the silver casing gently with a specialized silver polishing cloth while keeping liquid polishes away from the delicate fabric insert to prevent staining.
