Large Antique Victorian Old Sheffield Plate Wine Coaster

Description

This is a lovely and unusual raised wine coaster. It is large enough for a champagne bottle or magnum.

Dating towards the end of the Victorian era, the coaster has pierced sides decorated with swags of harebells and four lion masks. The inside of the base is also plated, rather than the usual turned wood. The claw feet are at the end of elegant reeded legs surrounding a central boss which is equally attractive. There are a few areas where the Old Sheffield Plate has worn away (usually though over-enthusiastic cleaning) but this does not in any way detract from the eye-catching piece.
