Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The lyre clock emerged during the Neoclassical movement in late eighteenth-century France, drawing aesthetic inspiration from classical Greco-Roman instruments. Symbolising music, poetry, and Apollo, the sun god, these timepieces gained immense popularity under King Louis XVI and remained an enduring decorative motif throughout the nineteenth century.

Authentic French lyre clocks typically combine mercury-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, with high-grade timber veneers like mahogany, rosewood, or fruitwood, alongside white marble bases. Dials are traditionally fashioned from painted enamel on copper, concealing brass spring-driven clockwork movements.

Key identification markers include mercury-gilded brass or bronze mounts exhibiting precise chasing, hand-painted floral or numerical details on an enamel dial, and stamped maker marks or serial numbers on the rear brass movement plate. Construction techniques like hand-cut screws and heavy cast components further confirm period origin.

A lyre clock acts as a dramatic focal point when positioned symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece or a marble-topped sideboard. In modern spaces, pairing this intricate object with clean architectural lines or minimal artwork provides a striking historical contrast.

Gilt bronze should be dusted gently with a soft microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, abrasives, or brass polishes that strip protective gilding. Clock movements require professional servicing by a qualified horologist every five to seven years to ensure longevity and proper operation.
