Antique Ushak Carpet

19th century
Description

An antique Ushak carpet with very pale colours and minimal almost European design. Ushaks were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and soft dyes are not uncommon.  Younger Ushaks or Oushaks will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs.  This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional.  The condition is good, with a lush soft wool pile which we have cleaned and the ends and fringes are secured.  A decorative subtle piece ideal for a soft scheme.

Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their sometimes softer palette than persian carpets, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire the UK & Europe by appointment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ushak (or Oushak) carpets originate from the town of Usak in western Anatolia, Turkey, a major centre for rug weaving since the 15th century. They are characterized by large-scale geometric or floral medallion designs, open fields, and a distinctive palette of muted tones.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a wool or cotton warp and weft. They feature Ghiordes (symmetrical) knots and utilize natural vegetable dyes to create soft, varied colour tones.

Authentic pieces display characteristic Turkish Ghiordes knotting, a relatively low knot density resulting in a soft handle, and iconic design motifs such as large central medallions and spandrels in subdued, natural shades.

Their neutral, muted tones allow Ushak carpets to anchor layered traditional spaces or provide texture and warmth in modern minimalist and English country interiors.

Suction vacuum without a beater bar regularly to prevent pile damage, use a quality rug pad underneath for stability, rotate periodically to ensure even wear, and clean professionally when required.
