Produced between 1868 and 1912, Japanese Meiji period metalwork is characterized by high technical skill, intricate relief carving, and naturalistic motifs such as birds, flowers, and animals, often created for export to Western markets.

Craftsmen utilized lost-wax casting techniques followed by extensive hand-chiselling and hand-chasing. The copper alloy bronzes were treated with chemical patinations to achieve deep, varied tones ranging from rich brown to near-black.

Authentic pieces feature sharp, hand-finished high-relief detailing rather than modern soft cast lines. They generally possess substantial weight, age-appropriate patination inside and beneath the base, and occasional maker seals or signatures.

Positioning a pair symmetrically on a dining room sideboard, large console table, or wide fireplace mantel adds height, architectural weight, and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth. To maintain the original chemical patina, avoid water, metal polishes, and chemical cleaners, and apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually.
