Fine Early Victorian Figured Mahogany London Stick Barometer

Description

A Fine Early Victorian figured mahogany London stick barometer c.1840. Made by John Newman* of Regent Street, London (w.1816-62). Original inverted bone scales with vernier marker to the top of the mercury tube. Mercury action thermometer to the side. Maker's name to the top . Bevelled edge glass front. Stepped pediment to the top. Fine figured mahogany veneers and ebony stringing to the slim case. Turned cistern cover to the base. Full working order. Measures 38" long x 4" wide at the base x 3.5" deep. Stock no. 35801.

* John Frederick Newman made standard and portable barometers for the Ross expedition and his meteorological station barometers were installed throughout the British Empire. He invented the Newman mountain barometer. He exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and was the leading scientific barometer maker of his day. Taken over by Negretti & Zambra in 1862.
