This is a beautiful pastel portrait of an Allegorical Lady with flowers in her hair and holding a dove representing peace. The picture is by John Saunders who was an extremely productive travelling pastel portraitist. John Saunders work is represented in the National portrait Gallery London with a self portrait in their collection. He worked mainly in East Anglia and the South of England in the first decades of the 18th century. He is known to have worked in Norwich, Stourbridge Worcestershire and elsewhere around this time. The portrait is signed and dated 1732 to the top right hand corner. This is on paper laid onto canvas on board and is unframed.
The picture measures 53 cms by 38 cms.
(John Saunders son, also John son was an extremely noted painter within his own right, painting as John Sanders. His works are represented in British National Galleries where more than five of his pictures are held in their collections.)
