Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, wealthy European aristocrats undertook the Grand Tour across Europe to expand their cultural knowledge. Small bronze sculptures depicting classical subjects, cherubs, and mythological figures were frequently purchased in Italy and France as educational mementos and status symbols.

These figures were traditionally cast in bronze using the lost-wax technique, allowing for intricate detailing. Afterwards, craftsmen performed hand-chasing to refine surface textures before applying a dark chemical patina and mounting the bronze onto a carved marble plinth.

Authentic period examples exhibit refined hand-chased details in the hair, drapery, and facial features rather than modern machine finishing. They display natural age-related patination, casting seams appropriate to the period, and are anchored to traditional period marble bases using historic threaded rods.

A bronze putto figure provides rich visual weight and historical character when placed on a mantelpiece, floating bookshelf, or mahogany writing desk. Layering small classical bronzes alongside vintage books or minimalist ceramic vessels creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Maintain bronze sculptures by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, or abrasive polishes that strip protective patination, and keep the marble base dry to prevent staining.
