Fine Qashqai Rug, Persia, Circa 1890, 1.98m X 1.46m

Description

This fine tribal rug has great wool quality and excellent weaving. The design is full of tribal character with the ubiquitous three linked medallions surrounded by myriad stylised floral ornaments on a sapphire blue field. Note the lovely apricot spandrels in the corner of the field. This rug has survived the generations in excellent condition, retaining a full even velvety pile. There is one small old repair, otherwise in original condition. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.

Qashqai rugs were traditionally woven by the Qashqai, a confederation of nomadic tribes living in the Fars province of southwestern Persia. These rugs reflect nomadic weaving heritage, characterised by geometric patterns, central medallions, and stylized depictions of local flora and fauna.

Qashqai rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. The wool is dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in rich navy, terracotta, ochre, and blue tones woven on portable horizontal looms.

Authentic Qashqai rugs feature a wool warp and weft, asymmetric or symmetric hand-tying, and slight variations in pattern symmetry typical of nomadic looms. Look for traditional motifs such as repeated diamond pole medallions, stylized animals, geometric flowers, and multi-layered guard borders.

A Qashqai rug adds depth and color balance to contemporary or traditional spaces. Position the rug centrally under living room furniture or beneath a dining table on natural timber flooring to highlight its rich dark navy and terracotta hues.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Clean spills immediately with a damp cloth and mild neutral soapy water, rotate the rug annually to distribute tread wear, and use a high-quality rug pad underneath.
