George II Walnut Featherbanded Secretaire C.1740-1760.

18th century
Description

A George II provincial walnut secretaire / bookcase / desk, c.1740-1760, of lovely proportions. Possibly of East Anglian/Norfolk origin.

The chest of drawers sits above four vertically aligned block bracket feet and has two long and three short drawers, all lap-dovetailed with historically replaced locks (the key for which remains nailed to the inside of the central top drawer). The chest has an inset hinged fold out desk to the top which is held in place when opened by bent metal pins to the front.

The flat cornice bookcase sits atop the chest with three fully adjustable shelves. The bookcase doors have engraved brass cabinet hinges and two inner bolts; the lower more consistent with 17th century design, but the larger top bolt being consistent with the early Georgian period. The lock and glass are later replacements.

There is some light wear commensurate with age, particularly to a small area at the front where the hinged desk is held in place by the pins, but overall the desk remains in an excellent condition with a wonderful patina throughout.

An attractive and unique piece.
