A Coco de Mer nut dating from the late 19th Century. Resembling the intimate parts of a woman, they were brought back to Europe by Sailors and tourists. They have become very collectable.

The Coco-de-Mer is also known as the double coconut palm. It is an ancient species, one of the most primitive, and native only to the inner islands of the Seychelles. The palm tree has become extinct on three of the islands. It remains present but endangered on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse.

This example has been cut out to form a twin section basket. This was often the work of seafarers returning to Europe.

Importantly, this piece displays and sits well as seen in the photo.

It has a wonderful patina and in excellent condition.
