English delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware manufactured in Britain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Inspired by Dutch imports and imported Chinese porcelain, it features cobalt blue hand-painted decoration on an opaque lead-tin glaze.

These chargers were shaped from coarse earthenware clay and coated in a liquid lead glaze made opaque white by adding tin oxide. Artisans painted designs directly onto the damp glaze using mineral oxides before firing the ceramic in a kiln.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit rim chipping, known as fritting, where the delicate tin glaze has flaked away to reveal the terracotta or buff clay beneath. They also feature subtle brushwork variations, pinholes in the glaze, and unglazed sections on the reverse rim.
