Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Coal helmets, also known as coal scuttles or hods, originated in the 18th and 19th centuries as utilitarian vessels designed to transport and pour coal into home fireplaces. During the Victorian and Arts & Crafts eras, brass versions became decorative hearth accessories, shaped like helmets with angled spouts to facilitate direct tipping into grate fires.

Traditional coal scuttles were constructed primarily from sheet brass or copper, frequently joined with rivets and supported on cast or raised pedestal bases. Many late 19th-century and early 20th-century pieces feature hand-hammered or stippled surface textures alongside wrought metal handles and integrated shovel brackets at the rear.

Authentic period coal helmets often display visible hand-riveted joints, natural unevenness from hand-hammering, and genuine surface oxidisation within crevices. Original shovels will typically match the design motifs of the vessel and fit into custom-made rear brackets rather than loose modern fittings.

In contemporary interiors, a coal scuttle functions well when placed alongside a wood-burning stove or traditional open fireplace to hold kindling, pinecones, or logs. Alternatively, these decorative metal vessels can be repurposed as unique planter holders or standalone hearth features.

To preserve historic brass, dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grime accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that remove natural aged patina; a gentle application of specialised microcrystalline wax helps protect the surface while retaining historic character.
