Antique 8 Day Striking Vienna Wall Clock, Restored, Lovely Condition

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Dating from the 1880's, this German 'Vienna' spring-wound wall clock is in excellent condition with the case and eight day movement having been restored and the excellent condition original dial being adorned by the original hands. The clock strikes the full hour at the hour and once at the half with a lovely mellow tone on a coiled gong and the stabilising brackets to stop the clock moving on the wall when the glazed door is opened are present. As with all my clocks this handsome piece comes with a two year guarantee for peace of mind

Rather than trusting a courier of any sort I unreservedly recommend collection or I can deliver and set-up free regionally or nationally at a competitive rate, with a full handover experience to answer any and all questions. These clocks have a fragile glass and even the best courier damages items. Also the pendulum will need reattaching within the movement so it is far better for a dealer to meet a client and talk them through the process, or set the clock up properly for them, rather than leave the client struggling at the other end on their own.

Declaration

Clockwise has dated this Antique Vienna Wall Clock to the 1880s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Austria during the early nineteenth century, Vienna regulators are precision pendulum clocks known for their glazed timber cases and clean mechanical movements. Initially created as master clocks to standardize time, they became popular architectural wall pieces across Europe throughout the Victorian era.

Cases are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, often features turned pilasters and carved pediments. The movements utilize brass gearing, white enamel dials, steel hands, and polished brass pendulums visible through clear glass door panels.

Authentic examples feature two-part or single enamel dials with Roman numerals, finely turned woodwork without modern staple joinery, and heavy brass mechanical movements. Look for precise hand-carved details, timber backboards showing age, and weight-driven or spring-driven mechanisms.

Position the clock as a focal point on a narrow wall, above a sideboard, or along a hallway or staircase wall. The rich timber hues and classical architectural lines contrast effectively against contemporary neutral paint palettes or minimalist plaster walls.

Ensure the clock case is mounted strictly level on the wall to maintain a steady beat. Wind the mechanism regularly using the correct key size, keep the clock away from direct heat sources or high humidity, and have the mechanical movement lubricated by a professional horologist every three to five years.
