A rare George V shipping interest silver and enamel vesta case, rounded rectangular shape with a sprung hinged flip top lid, with the blue enamel flag of the John Holt & Co Shipping Company, and engraved ''S.S. Jonathan C. Holt.’ Made to commemorate the launch of the S.S. Jonathan C. Holt Built by Cammel Laird & Co Ltd, Birkenhead. *
Condition: In excellent collector’s condition with no damage or repair and no losses to the enamel, good hallmarks.

*The S.S. Jonathan Holt was an armed cargo steamer. At 02.12 hours on 24 February 1941, U-Boat U-97 fired two torpedoes at convoy OB-289 southwest of the Faroe Islands and reported one ship sunk, but in fact the Mansepool and Jonathan Holt were hit and sunk. The master, 38 crew members, two gunners and ten passengers (including four SOE agents) from the Jonathan Holt (Master William Stephenson) were lost. Two crew members and one passenger were picked up by HMS Petunia (K 79) (LtCdr G.V. Legassisk, RNR) and landed at Stornoway. Two crew members and one passenger were picked up by the British rescue ship Copeland (Master J. McKellar, OBE) and landed at Greenock.
