Scott Brothers Of Southwick Plate Sunderland Ware

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Rams Head Antiques

This is a beautiful rare Scott Brothers transfer printed plate in yellow slip with the very decorative Paisley pattern. The plate has lovely contrasting colours and a pretty shape. It is stamped Scott Brothers to the back and is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration. Circa 1850.

Thomas Pearson Scott was said to have invented the technique of using yellow slip instead of ink to apply the transfers. He carried out the process in secret in a separate room and when he died in 1864 the production of this type of ware ceased.

Examples of the Paisley pattern can be seen in the Sunderland Museum and are illustrated in “Sunderland Pottery” by John C Baker page 19, plate V. The plate measures 24 cms in diameter.
