Sauce boats gained prominence in the early eighteenth century as formal dining customs evolved to include dedicated vessels for gravies, dressings, and hot sauces. Irish silversmiths created distinct variations characterised by robust proportions, elaborate repousse chasing, and shell-capped feet.
