Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced primarily in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the seventeenth century onwards, created to emulate imported Chinese porcelain using cobalt blue decoration on a white glaze background.

These bowls were shaped from local clay, covered in an opaque white tin glaze, hand-painted with cobalt oxide pigments prior to firing, and coated in a clear lead glaze to produce a glossy surface.

Authentic historic Delftware displays a soft reddish or yellowish earthenware body where glaze is chipped, visible surface crazing, slight irregularities in hand-painted motifs, and small peg marks on the base from kiln firing.

Place the bowl on a sideboard, display dresser, or mantelpiece alongside brass objects or modern wood furniture to complement both contemporary and traditional interior palettes.

Dust the surface with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid soaking the ceramic in water, as moisture can permeate glaze cracks and weaken the underlying porous clay body.
