Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oak coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, widely manufactured across Britain and Europe throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Originally used to secure valuable household linens, silver, and clothing, coffers served as essential multi-functional furniture items in historic homes.

Traditional coffers were constructed primarily from native English or European oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. The structure comprises vertical stiles and horizontal rails surrounding recessed timber panels, often fitted with hand-wrought iron hinges and lock plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit irregular hand-sawn timber marks, hand-carved decorative motifs, and wooden peg joinery visible at the joints. Authentic age presents as a dark, aged patina, original ironwork showing subtle oxidisation, and slight shrinkage along the grain of the wood panels over time.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a focal point at the foot of a bed, within an entryway, or positioned behind a sofa. Combining the dark timber structure with modern upholstery, textured rugs, or contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean the surface regularly using a soft, dry cotton cloth to remove dust. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original patina, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
