A Magnificent Pair of Old Sheffield Plate Candelabra

18th century
Description

A magnificent pair of Old Sheffield Plate candelabra. Each branch with two detachable sconces, the centre knop also being detachable to make a choice of two or three candles in each.

Littered with makers marks but sadly, we cannot attribute the marks to a known maker, but almost certainly made in Birmingham around 1820.

Size: 16" high (41cm) x 16.5" wide (42cm)

Dealers note: These are a really nice pair of candelabra with a little bleeding, but hardly noticeable. A spectacular pair to grace the most opulent dining table.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a manufacturing process developed in the mid-18th century where layers of silver and copper were fused together through heat and pressure before being wrought into functional objects. This technique allowed for the creation of substantial silver-surfaced tableware and lighting prior to the invention of electroplating in the 1840s.

Candelabra from this period typically feature a fused copper core coated with sheets of sterling silver, often decorated with die-struck silver mounts and hand-chased borders. The upper branch sections are commonly detachable, allowing the weighted bases to be utilized independently as single candlesticks.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit subtle copper exposure or bleeding at points of extended wear, turned wooden or pitch-filled weighted bases, and silver solder seams along joints. They rarely bear standard silver hallmarks, relying instead on maker marks, pseudo-hallmarks, or unmarked construction.

A pair of multi-branch candelabra provides structural symmetry when arranged on a formal dining table or a dark wood sideboard. Their metallic surface and classical profile balance modern minimalist decor when set against plain linen textiles or neutral walls.

Maintain these surfaces by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and using non-abrasive silver polish formulated for plated metal only when oxidisation occurs. Excessive polishing should be avoided to protect the thin silver layer covering the copper base.
