A stunning English Victorian decorative gilt archtop overmantle mirror. It has its original glass and wood panelled back. It is in very good condition with nice gilding. The original glass is also in good condition with some nice foxing to it, as can be seen in the images attached. It is a wonderful size.

Victorian archtop overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit above fireplace mantels during the 19th century. Characterised by a flat base to rest flush against a shelf and a rounded top arch, these mirrors often featured gilded wood and gesso frames decorated with moulded beadwork, leaf motifs, or side scroll flourishes.

Traditional Victorian gilt frames were constructed using a softwood core, typically pine, coated in layers of gesso and plaster to mould detailed ornamentation. Gold leaf was applied over a clay bole base using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding thick plate glass with silvered backing.
