Description

A fine mid-19th century French school textural oil on canvas depicting a mother and child in landscape gardens, illegibly signed to the bottom right corner. The work is housed in a gilt cushion frame of the period.

There is some slight crazing to the paint in places but otherwise the canvas itself remains in an excellent condition with no paint losses.

The substantial gilt cushion frame has signs of wear commensurate with age namely hairline cracks to the plaster, none of which are substantial such that they detract from the aesthetics of the frame. There is an old label to the reverse of the frame for 'Chas. G. Smithers, Carver, Gilder, Picture Frame Maker & Printseller, 96, Leadenhall Street, London'.

A extremely fine and striking example of mid-19th century French impressionism.
