A wheel barometer, often referred to as a banjo barometer due to its distinctive outline, is a instrument designed to record atmospheric pressure changes via a mercury column connected to a pulley system and dial pointer. Popularised during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these pieces functioned as both practical scientific tools and decorative household items.

Traditional wheel barometers were constructed using fine timber casings, predominantly mahogany or rosewood, frequently detailed with shell or floral marquetry inlays. They incorporate hand-engraved silvered brass dials, blown glass mercury tubes, and cast brass finials or fittings.

Authentic Georgian wheel barometers feature hand-engraved silvered dials, delicate satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlays, and traditional mercury glass tubes. Maker names were commonly engraved near the centre of the main dial or spirit thermometer plate.

An antique wheel barometer serves as an elegant vertical accent when displayed in a narrow hallway, study, or library wall. Positioning the warm timber against neutral or rich dark paint shades highlights the inlaid details and metallic dial.

Dust the timber housing regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. Ensure the instrument remains mounted securely in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature fluctuations.
